Preliminary Shoot

Shoot Day

The day of my thriller shoot began with my group finding out that it was no longer possible to go to our decided location (one of our actors’ apartments near the Barbican) due to the distance and traffic. We were all really annoyed that it changed right at the last minute and the teachers had left it so late in telling us. For a bit I felt like we wouldn't be able to change around our plot to fit a new shooting location, at Cornhill House, but with a short meeting with our group, we figured out a sensible alternative which sounded equally as effective. It was a shame that we couldn't use some of the brilliant views from our original location, but we had to get on with it. The new storyboards turned out to be almost the same as the original ones which was quite surprising, as the change in location was so great. We decided to change the storyboard from the hacker in her, to a hotel room. In the long run, I feel it was a better idea, the plot flows better. We prepared our original idea very well, including a shot list, costume list, cast list, props list and a full storyboard. Due to the new arrangements, these altered, but we still stuck to a thriller genre as planned. Our storyboard relates to the target audience because it includes an important current affair (Wikileaks) which could affect anyone.

We set up on location, only using a couple of props (gun and laptop) as our new shoot idea focused on the corridors and rooms. Filming in a hotel-like location, may have attracted the target audience as fight scenes in action-thrillers such as Inception, Casino Royale etc seem to occur in these locations. The contrast of the quite corridor encourages an adrenalin rush when teamed with an unexpected fight. We chose to film a lot of quick cuts, to represent the speed of the chase. We also included a lot of tracking shots and close ups on Lillie typing on the laptop to emphasize the fact that it is very important. All our shots worked well on the day, signifying the pressure and intensity of the chase between the characters. The fight scene worked really well when we actuary shot it. We were a bit apprehensive when writing it in the storyboard that it would look really fake and tacky, but it turned out realistic and griping. It took more time to plan than anything else we shot but it was defiantly worth it! Even if our actors were completely shattered after! Point of view shots were vital to make the sequence look more life-like.

We chose to have our hacker (Lillie) dressed in a black top, black jeans, and black boots which is what stereotypical hackers seemed to be dressed in, when watching similar films for our research. The government agent (Will) was dressed in a black suit, black tie and a white and blue stripy shirt. We thought this would be appropriate for him to be dressed like this because it shows his authority in the sequence compared to the hacker, we also see a lot of agents dressed in suits in other action-thrillers (Men In Black, War Of The Worlds, etc). The use of guns and modern-day technology (the laptop) are seen on most action-thrillers so we thought it would only be appropriate to include it in ours to make it seem more authentic.
